Brighton & Hove Albion produced an impressive performance at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, beating defending Premier League champions Arsenal 3-0 and ending their perfect start to the 2026/27 season.
Arsenal arrived on the south coast having won their opening four league matches and seven games in all competitions. Mikel Arteta’s side had been aiming to continue that run, but Brighton’s pressing and attacking intensity quickly made the visitors uncomfortable.
Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute, giving Brighton a deserved lead after the hosts had created several promising opportunities. Arsenal struggled to establish control as Brighton repeatedly disrupted their attempts to build from the back.
Brighton doubled their advantage just before half-time when Charalampos Kostoulas found the net with a composed finish. The 19-year-old had already threatened Arsenal's defence and gave the hosts a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Arteta made changes as Arsenal searched for a response, but Brighton continued to look dangerous after the restart. Chema Andrés then headed home from a corner in the 57th minute to make it 3-0 and put the result beyond Arsenal.
The defeat was Arsenal’s first of the campaign and ended their unbeaten run at the start of their title defence. It also prevented the Gunners from matching their historic record of eight consecutive wins at the beginning of a season.
Brighton, meanwhile, moved up to third place after the victory. The Seagulls have made a strong attacking start to the campaign and have now scored 16 goals in their opening five league matches, according to the Guardian’s match report.
For Arteta, the international break now provides time to assess what went wrong. Arsenal struggled to create a sustained attacking threat and were repeatedly exposed by Brighton’s high-energy approach.
The result also marked a memorable occasion for Brighton, who were celebrating the club’s 125th anniversary. Fabian Hürzeler’s team marked the occasion with a convincing victory over the reigning champions.
Arsenal will now look to respond when Premier League action resumes, while Brighton will aim to build on a result that has given them significant momentum early in the season.
