Viktor Gyokeres sends clear message to Mikel Arteta after breaking Nations League record

Viktor Gyokeres has strengthened his case for more playing time at Arsenal after making UEFA Nations League history during Sweden’s 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Arsenal striker opened the scoring in Zenica on Friday, continuing his impressive run for Sweden during the international break. His goal was later cancelled out by Kerim Alajbegovic as the two teams shared the points.

Gyokeres’ strike was significant beyond the result. According to UEFA, the 28-year-old became the first player to score in six consecutive Nations League appearances, extending a run that began against Estonia in October 2024.

His scoring streak has included goals against Estonia, Slovakia and Azerbaijan, when he scored four times, before continuing the run with goals against Romania and Poland in Sweden’s current Nations League campaign.

The record comes at a time when Gyokeres has not been a regular starter for Arsenal. The forward has faced competition for the central attacking position, while his limited Premier League minutes have prompted discussion about his role under manager Mikel Arteta.

Gyokeres, however, has previously made it clear that he remains committed to Arsenal. He said he was fully focused on the club during pre-season and that staying at the Emirates was always his intention.

“I’m extremely happy at the club,” Gyokeres said, while also acknowledging that he wants to play as much as possible.

His latest international performances could provide Arteta with another option when Arsenal return to domestic action. The Gunners are scheduled to face Leeds United on October 10, while Kai Havertz is currently dealing with a muscle injury sustained during international duty.

Gyokeres will have another opportunity to extend his Nations League scoring record when Sweden face Romania in Bucharest on Monday. After that match, attention will turn back to Arsenal and whether his international form translates into a larger role at club level.

For now, the record provides a clear statistical indication of Gyokeres’ current scoring form for Sweden, while his comments about wanting more playing time leave his ambitions at Arsenal equally clear.
