ChatGPT and online gaming platform Roblox could eventually come under the scope of the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA) if they meet the regulation's criteria, a spokesperson for the European Commission has said.

The comments indicate that Brussels is closely monitoring the rapid growth of artificial intelligence services and interactive online platforms as regulators continue expanding oversight of the digital ecosystem.

The Digital Services Act, which came into force to strengthen online accountability, requires major digital platforms to adopt stricter measures to tackle illegal content, protect users and improve transparency.

AI Platforms Under Increasing Scrutiny

The Commission spokesperson said the inclusion of individual platforms under the DSA depends on whether they meet thresholds established under the legislation, including the size of their user base within the European Union.

Although neither ChatGPT nor Roblox has been formally designated under the specific provisions discussed, the Commission noted that fast-growing digital services are continuously assessed as the online landscape evolves.

The remarks reflect growing regulatory attention on generative AI systems and platforms that attract millions of users, particularly children and teenagers.

What the Digital Services Act Requires

The DSA introduces a wide range of obligations for large online platforms, including:

Platforms classified as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs) or Very Large Online Search Engines (VLOSEs) face the most extensive regulatory requirements under the legislation.
