The European Union has imposed fresh sanctions on several Iranian individuals, including members of the judiciary and a senior figure linked to an alleged cyber group, as part of its latest measures targeting human rights abuses and malicious cyber activities.

In a statement, the Council of the European Union said the new sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans against those designated. EU member states are also prohibited from making funds or economic resources available to the sanctioned individuals.

According to the EU, the measures target Iranian judges accused of involvement in judicial actions that the bloc says violated fundamental human rights, including the handling of politically sensitive cases. The sanctions also extend to a leading figure associated with a cyber group that European authorities allege has been involved in malicious cyber operations targeting individuals and organizations.

European officials said the latest actions underscore the bloc's commitment to promoting accountability for human rights violations and countering cyber threats that undermine international security and democratic institutions.

"The European Union remains committed to responding to serious human rights violations and malicious cyber activities through targeted restrictive measures," the Council said in its announcement.

The sanctions form part of the EU's broader framework for addressing human rights concerns in Iran and responding to cyber operations attributed to state-linked or affiliated actors. The bloc has introduced multiple rounds of sanctions against Iranian officials and entities in recent years.

Iran has repeatedly rejected similar sanctions imposed by the European Union and other Western governments, describing them as politically motivated and lacking legal justification. Tehran has consistently denied allegations of directing or supporting malicious cyber activities against foreign targets and has criticized Western sanctions as unlawful.

Analysts say the latest sanctions are unlikely to produce an immediate change in relations between Tehran and Brussels but could further complicate diplomatic engagement at a time when regional security and Iran's nuclear programme remain key international concerns.

The move comes amid continuing tensions between Iran and several Western nations over human rights, cybersecurity, regional security issues and Tehran's broader relationship with Europe and the United States.

Observers note that targeted sanctions have become a common foreign policy tool used by the European Union to increase pressure on individuals accused of serious misconduct while avoiding broader economic measures that could have wider humanitarian consequences.

The newly announced sanctions take effect following their publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, with EU authorities expected to continue monitoring developments and reviewing additional measures if necessary.
