German authorities have launched a counterterrorism investigation after an airport employee discovered a drone carrying an explosive device inside the secure perimeter of Leipzig/Halle Airport, one of Europe's busiest cargo hubs.

The discovery prompted a major security operation, temporary runway closures and flight disruptions as bomb disposal experts safely neutralised the device.

Explosive Device Safely Defused

Police said the drone was found near the airport's southern runway carrying what officials described as an improvised explosive device.

Bomb disposal specialists deployed a robot to examine the drone before successfully removing its detonator, preventing any explosion.

Authorities stressed that there was no danger to passengers or airport staff, although operations were temporarily suspended while the area was secured.

Cargo Plane Also Damaged

During the disruption, a DHL cargo aircraft that had diverted after aborting its landing reportedly struck an unidentified flying object, sustaining minor damage before landing safely elsewhere.

Investigators are examining whether the collision was connected to the explosive drone, although authorities have not yet confirmed any link.

Counterterrorism Prosecutors Take Over

The investigation has been handed to prosecutors in the eastern German state of Saxony, who specialise in politically motivated and extremist crimes.

Authorities have not identified any suspects or formally attributed responsibility, but officials said all possible motives—including sabotage—are being examined.

Strategic Cargo Hub

Leipzig/Halle Airport serves as a major European logistics centre for DHL, Antonov Airlines, the German military and NATO operations.

The airport's strategic importance has heightened concerns about the incident, particularly because the drone was reportedly discovered near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft.

Security Concerns Intensify

The incident follows a series of suspicious drone overflights and alleged sabotage attempts targeting critical infrastructure across Germany and Europe in recent years.

German officials say the latest discovery represents a serious security concern and have pledged a thorough investigation into how the explosive-equipped drone entered the airport's restricted area.

Authorities are also reviewing airport security procedures as investigations continue.
