Police said Tete was sitting in his car waiting for his gate to open when two armed men wearing balaclavas approached and opened fire. A 27-year-old woman travelling with him was also shot and remains in hospital. The motive for the attack is not yet known, and an investigation is underway.

Tete was a respected figure in South African boxing. He won the IBF junior-bantamweight title in 2014 before claiming the WBO bantamweight championship in 2017. He was also famous for his record-breaking 11-second knockout of Siboniso Gonya in 2017, one of the fastest finishes in a world title fight.

His death has sparked an outpouring of grief across South Africa, with officials and members of the boxing community mourning a fighter who had hoped to return to the ring later this year.

Police are continuing their search for the attackers as tributes pour in for the former champion.
