Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has welcomed a fresh group of defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC) into the NDC and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, describing their decision as a sign of growing confidence in the party's vision.

The reception took place in Kano, where Kwankwaso formally received the delegation led by Danlami Zakari Unguwar Gertai (Garkuwan Gari) alongside other former APC members from Gari Local Government Area. The latest defections add to a series of political realignments that have reshaped Kano's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso Welcomes New Members

Addressing the defectors, Kwankwaso expressed appreciation for their decision to join the NDC, assuring them that the party remains committed to inclusive leadership, grassroots mobilisation and democratic governance.

He encouraged the new members to work with existing party structures to strengthen the NDC across Kano and contribute to its preparations for future elections.

Kwankwaso also emphasised the importance of unity and discipline within the party, urging members to focus on policies aimed at improving governance and the welfare of Nigerians.

Growing Political Realignment

The latest defections come amid increasing political activity in Kano State as parties reposition themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.

In recent months, several politicians from different parties have crossed over to the NDC, reflecting shifting alliances and renewed competition among Nigeria's major political blocs.

Political observers say Kano remains one of the country's most strategically important states, making every major defection significant for both ruling and opposition parties.

APC Yet to Respond

As of the time of publication, the Kano State chapter of the APC had not issued an official statement regarding the latest defections.

The ruling party has previously maintained that individual defections would not weaken its political structure, expressing confidence in its support base across the state.

Looking Ahead

With preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gathering momentum, analysts expect more political movements as parties seek to strengthen their positions across key states.

Kwankwaso's reception of the former APC members is likely to intensify political competition in Kano, where the NDC continues efforts to expand its influence through the Kwankwasiyya Movement and other grassroots structures.
