Tinubu Hails Rescue of 308 Kwara, Niger Abductees, Orders Stronger Early Warning Systems

President Commends Joint Security Operation, Calls for Improved Intelligence to Prevent Future Kidnappings                        

                                        

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised Nigerian security agencies following the successful rescue of 308 kidnapped victims abducted in separate attacks in Kwara and Niger states, describing the operation as a major breakthrough in the country's fight against kidnapping and banditry.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the security forces for carrying out what the Presidency described as the largest same-day rescue operation in recent Nigerian history.

308 Victims Rescued

According to the Presidency, 163 victims were rescued after being abducted from Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, while the remaining 145 victims were freed from kidnappers in Niger State.

The rescue operation took place inside the Kainji Lake National Park Forest in New Bussa Local Government Area of Niger State, following what officials described as an intelligence-driven mission involving multiple security agencies.

Joint Security Operation

The successful operation involved coordinated efforts by the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.

President Tinubu praised the agencies for their professionalism, courage and growing level of inter-agency cooperation.

“The successful execution of this intelligence-led operation demonstrates the growing efficiency and collaboration among our security services,” the President said, while commending the personnel involved for their dedication to protecting lives.

Victims Receiving Medical Care

The Presidency confirmed that all rescued victims were taken to the medical facility at Wawa Cantonment, where they are receiving first aid and medical attention before being reunited with their families through their respective state governments.

Officials said rehabilitation and psychosocial support would also be provided where necessary.

Tinubu Orders Stronger Preventive Measures

While celebrating the successful rescue, President Tinubu directed security agencies to strengthen preventive security measures across vulnerable communities.

He specifically called for:

• Improved early warning systems.
• Enhanced community-based intelligence gathering.
• Faster emergency response capabilities.
• Closer collaboration among security agencies.

The President stressed that preventing kidnappings remains as important as rescuing victims after attacks occur.

Renewed Focus on Security

Kidnapping for ransom continues to pose one of Nigeria's most serious security challenges, particularly in parts of the North-Central and North-West regions.

The latest rescue operation is expected to boost confidence in ongoing counter-kidnapping efforts, although security analysts note that sustained intelligence operations and stronger community partnerships will be essential to reducing future attacks.

The Presidency reaffirmed its commitment to supporting security agencies with the resources and coordination required to protect Nigerians and restore lasting peace across affected communities.
