Bandits have attacked Dukura community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing two residents and taking away livestock and motorcycles belonging to members of the community.
The attack reportedly occurred on Monday morning when the armed men blocked a road linking the affected communities to Tambuwal market, disrupting movement in the area.
According to the report, the attackers rustled cows, camels and sheep and also took motorcycles belonging to some commercial motorcycle operators before security personnel arrived.
The incident reportedly caused tension in Dukura, Dalijan and other communities in Girkau Ward, including Zugu, Indire, Mazoji, Tungar Kabawa, Runtuwa, Jabga and Sabon Garin Zugu.
Confirming the attack, Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said the command received information about the incident and immediately deployed personnel to the area.
Rufai said the police engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat. However, he confirmed that two people had already been killed before the arrival of the security personnel.
The police spokesman said investigations were continuing as authorities worked to establish further details of the incident and strengthen security around the affected communities.
The latest attack comes amid continued security concerns in parts of Sokoto State. Earlier in September, suspected bandits attacked Tofa community in Rabah Local Government Area, where at least 10 people were reported killed and dozens of residents were reportedly abducted.
Police authorities and local residents have continued to call for stronger security measures in vulnerable communities as attacks involving killings, abductions and livestock rustling persist in parts of the state.
