British Soldier Who Died in Ukraine Road Crash Named as Major Paul Wilks

The British Army officer who died in a road traffic accident in Ukraine has been identified as Major Paul Wilks, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

Major Wilks, 40, died on Saturday, September 12, in a road accident away from the front lines. The Ministry of Defence said his death was not connected to hostile action.

Major Wilks was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2012 and served throughout his career with the Intelligence Corps. He completed several operational tours, including deployments to Afghanistan.

He was recognised with two Operational Service Medals and received the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in May 2026.

His commanding officer described him as a highly capable intelligence officer who combined professionalism with warmth and a strong sense of humour. The officer also highlighted Major Wilks' devotion to his wife and two sons.

Lieutenant General Matthew Jones, Colonel Commandant of the Intelligence Corps, also paid tribute to Major Wilks, describing him as one of the corps' highly talented intelligence officers. He said Wilks remained calm under pressure and was known for his determination and professionalism.

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting expressed his condolences to Major Wilks' family, loved ones and colleagues, saying his death was a reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces and their families.

A small number of British military personnel are in Ukraine providing security for diplomats and supporting Ukraine's armed forces. Major Wilks' death is the second confirmed fatality involving a British service member in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion.

The previous confirmed death was that of 28-year-old British paratrooper George Hooley, who died in December while involved in the testing of a new defensive capability in Ukraine. The Ministry of Defence described his death as a tragic accident.
