Democrats are preparing to investigate business dealings involving President Donald Trump and members of his family if they regain control of either chamber of Congress in the November 2026 midterm elections.
Democratic lawmakers and congressional staffers are considering investigations into companies and business partners connected to the Trump family. Control of the House or Senate would give Democrats greater subpoena powers, additional investigative funding and expanded committee authority.
Among the areas drawing attention are Trump-linked cryptocurrency companies and Donald Trump Jr.’s venture capital firm, 1789 Capital. Democratic lawmakers said they are also interested in examining business relationships involving Trump family members and companies that have dealings with the federal government.
However, Democrats have not produced a final list of companies or individuals that would be investigated, and the potential inquiries do not by themselves establish that any wrongdoing occurred. Reuters reported that companies mentioned in discussions have not necessarily been accused of illegal activity.
Democrats are also examining the relationship between corporate donations and government policy. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse recently released a report alleging that oil and gas companies received favourable treatment after Trump sought major donations from the industry during his 2024 presidential campaign. The findings could become another area of congressional scrutiny.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries has said Democrats would seek to hold those responsible for wrongdoing accountable if they regain power. Other lawmakers, including Representative Jamie Raskin and Senator Richard Blumenthal, have identified Trump-linked business interests as potential subjects of oversight.
The White House has rejected the Democratic approach, accusing the party of seeking to obstruct Trump's agenda and of targeting the president without a legitimate basis. The administration has said it is prepared to respond to congressional oversight requests regardless of which party controls the House.
The investigations could also extend beyond the Trump family. Democrats have previously discussed examining government contracts, corporate donations, foreign investments, the proposed White House ballroom and business relationships involving companies that interact with the administration.
If Democrats win control of Congress, the investigations could begin early in 2027. Any findings would depend on the evidence obtained through hearings, document requests, subpoenas and other congressional oversight procedures.
For now, the plans remain conditional on the election outcome, and no conclusion of wrongdoing has been established against the individuals or companies that Democrats have identified as potential subjects of investigation.
