The conflict between the United States and Iran has escalated sharply after the U.S. military said it struck three Iranian oil tankers, following what Washington described as missile attacks against U.S. Navy vessels operating in the region.
The U.S. Central Command said an American aircraft carrier and a destroyer had evaded multiple Iranian attacks, with no U.S. personnel reported injured. According to the U.S. military, two Iranian oil carriers were permanently disabled while a third, which was unladen, was destroyed.
U.S. officials said the targeted tankers were connected to what they described as a shadow network that helps finance Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). CENTCOM warned that Washington could take further action against Iran's oil fleet if attacks on American forces continue.
Iran issues new warning to vessels
Iran has responded with its own warnings to ships operating around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping routes.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy claimed it had targeted three oil tankers travelling through what it called an "unauthorized route," as well as three vessels linked to the United States. The claims had not been independently confirmed by U.S. authorities at the time of reporting.
The IRGC Navy also issued a warning to vessels operating in the Gulf, telling ships to avoid what Tehran considers unauthorized waterways and cautioning that suspicious movements could be targeted. The warning raises fresh concerns for commercial shipping passing through the strategically important waterway.
Tensions rise around the Strait of Hormuz
The latest exchange comes amid renewed fighting between Washington and Tehran and growing concerns about the security of commercial shipping and global energy supplies.
