Lewis Hamilton is hoping to deliver a special moment for Ferrari by taking pole position at the Italian Grand Prix, but expects a fiercely competitive qualifying session at Monza.
The seven-time world champion believes the fight for the front of the grid could be extremely close after Ferrari showed strong pace during Friday’s practice sessions. Charles Leclerc led a Ferrari one-two in the opening session, with Hamilton second, before Mercedes responded in the afternoon as George Russell set the fastest time.
Hamilton described securing pole for Ferrari at Monza as the “ultimate dream,” given the importance of the Italian Grand Prix to the team and its passionate home supporters. The Briton has already enjoyed a strong 2026 season, including a victory in Barcelona, and will be looking to build on Ferrari’s promising start to the weekend.
However, Hamilton knows Ferrari will face serious competition. Russell topped FP2 with a 1:22.559, just 0.120 seconds ahead of Leclerc, while Kimi Antonelli was third and Hamilton finished fifth. The narrow gaps suggest qualifying could come down to small differences in individual sectors and the final flying laps.
Ferrari has also introduced an upgraded power unit for its home race, adding to optimism around the team. Hamilton and Leclerc will hope the improvement can translate into qualifying performance and give Ferrari a strong position for Sunday’s race.
The weekend carries additional significance for Ferrari as the team celebrates the 30th anniversary of Michael Schumacher’s first Italian Grand Prix victory. Hamilton will be aiming to add another memorable chapter to Ferrari’s long history at Monza by securing pole in front of the Tifosi.
With Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren all showing competitive pace, Hamilton's prediction of a very close qualifying battle could prove accurate. The fight for pole is set to be one of the major highlights of the Italian Grand Prix weekend.
