Thomas Tuchel has named his first England squad since the 2026 World Cup as the Three Lions prepare to begin a new UEFA Nations League campaign.
The squad includes recalls for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cole Palmer, while Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha have also been included. Dominic Calvert-Lewin returns to the group, while Eberechi Eze has retained his place.
Palmer missed England’s World Cup squad but has started the new season strongly for Chelsea, earning a return to Tuchel’s plans. Alexander-Arnold has also been brought back after being left out of the World Cup squad.
One notable absentee is Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden, who has not been recalled. The squad otherwise retains much of the core that helped England finish third at the World Cup.
England’s first Nations League match will be against world champions Spain at Wembley on Saturday, September 26. The game will be Tuchel’s first competitive match in charge since England’s World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina.
The Three Lions will then travel to face Czechia on September 29 before taking on Croatia away on October 3. England will complete the opening international window with another home match against Czechia on October 6.
The Nations League campaign comes with continued attention on Tuchel following the controversy surrounding his tactical decisions against Argentina. Despite the criticism, the Football Association continues to back the German coach, whose contract runs through Euro 2028.
Tuchel will now have the opportunity to test his squad against some of Europe's strongest teams while also introducing new options. The return of Palmer and Alexander-Arnold, alongside younger players such as Ngumoha and Scott, adds further competition for places.
England will hope the new campaign provides a positive start as Tuchel looks to build on the team's third-place World Cup finish and prepare the squad for the next major international tournament.
