Ukraine War: Putin Urges Russians to Vote as War Fuels Economic and Domestic Pressures

Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged citizens to take part in the country’s upcoming parliamentary election, presenting the vote as a demonstration of national unity and support for Russia’s soldiers and war effort in Ukraine.

The three-day election begins on Friday and will determine the composition of Russia’s 450-seat State Duma. It is the first parliamentary election since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In a televised address, Putin described voting as a civic responsibility and said the result would demonstrate that millions of Russians stand behind the country’s military and shared national interests. He also urged voters to reject what he described as attempts by foreign powers to weaken Russia.

The election comes as Russia faces growing economic pressures linked to the prolonged conflict. Reuters reported that some Russians have become increasingly concerned about the war’s impact on their lives and the wider economy.

Ukraine has also intensified long-range attacks against targets inside Russia, including energy and industrial facilities. Russian authorities have reported fuel shortages and disruptions in some areas, while Moscow has continued its military operations in Ukraine.

The Kremlin is closely watching voter participation and the election results as an indication of public sentiment toward the war. Russia’s ruling United Russia party is expected to retain its dominant position in parliament, while many anti-war candidates have been excluded from the ballot.

At the same time, Ukraine continues to face heavy military and financial pressures. Kyiv has proposed a record defence budget of 4.89 trillion hryvnias, or about $110 billion, for 2027 as the costs of the war continue to rise.

The security situation remains tense. On Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said a Russian drone strike on a passenger bus in southern Ukraine killed five people and injured at least seven others. A separate strike damaged a passenger train, although those aboard were evacuated safely.

With the Russian parliamentary election approaching, Putin’s appeal reflects the Kremlin’s effort to connect participation in the vote with national unity and support for the country’s military objectives, while the continuing war places additional pressure on both Russia and Ukraine.
