DSS Arraigns 5 Suspects Over Kidnap of 20 NYSC Members in Imo

The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned five suspects allegedly linked to the kidnapping of 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Imo State.

The arraignment took place on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, following the suspects’ arrest during intelligence-led security operations carried out in Rivers and Abia states.

The case follows the abduction of the prospective corps members on October 1, when armed men intercepted their vehicles along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway as they travelled to their assigned orientation camps.

According to reports by Channels Television and TVC News, the suspects were arrested between October 10 and 14 in operations involving security agencies. Three other suspected members of the alleged criminal gang reportedly escaped with gunshot injuries.

How the 20 Prospective Corps Members Were Abducted

The 20 prospective corps members were abducted on October 1, 2026, while travelling to their designated NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.

The attack occurred along the Owerri–Onitsha Expressway in Imo State and prompted a security response involving multiple agencies.

The incident raised fresh concerns about the safety of young Nigerians travelling to participate in the national service programme, particularly those journeying across state lines to attend orientation camps.

Security agencies subsequently intensified efforts to locate the victims and identify those responsible for the abduction.

Victims Rescued After Six Days in Captivity

The kidnapped prospective corps members were rescued on October 7 during a joint security operation at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo State.

Channels Television reported that the victims were taken for medical attention and necessary checks following their rescue.

The rescue brought an end to six days of captivity and allowed investigators to continue pursuing the suspected perpetrators.

Authorities later launched intelligence-led operations in Rivers and Abia states as part of efforts to track down members of the alleged kidnapping gang.

Five Suspects Arrested in Rivers and Abia

The five suspects were apprehended during security operations conducted between October 10 and 14, according to reports.

The operations covered Port Harcourt in Rivers State and Aba South Local Government Area in Abia State.

The arrests involved the DSS, military, police and other security personnel working to identify and apprehend those allegedly connected to the abduction.

Three other suspects reportedly escaped during the operations with varying degrees of gunshot injuries. Security agencies were said to have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.

The arrests represent a development in the investigation into the mass abduction, although the alleged involvement of each defendant remains a matter for the court to determine.

What Happens Next?

The arraignment marks a further stage in the legal process against the five suspects.

Further details concerning the charges, the defendants’ pleas and any subsequent court orders were not fully provided in the initial reports available at the time of publication.

The case is expected to form part of wider efforts to establish individual responsibility for the abduction and pursue accountability through the judicial process.

The reported escape of three other suspects also leaves security agencies with the task of locating those still at large.

For the victims and their families, the proceedings follow a frightening episode that began with the attack on their journey to NYSC orientation camps and ended with their rescue on October 7.

The case has renewed attention on highway security and the protection of prospective corps members travelling to fulfil their national service obligations.

The suspects remain accused persons, and the allegations against them must be established through the legal process.
