Burnley 1-2 Wolves: Tawanda Chirewa Seals Comeback as Clarets’ Turf Moor Crisis Deepens

Burnley’s miserable home run continued on Friday night as Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind to secure a 2-1 Championship victory at Turf Moor, leaving the Clarets without a home league win in 21 consecutive matches.

Jamie Vardy gave Burnley an early lead, but Fer López equalised before half-time before substitute Tawanda Chirewa scored the decisive goal in the second half.

The result was a significant boost for Wolves, who returned to winning ways after two successive defeats. For Burnley, however, the loss extended a damaging run that has lasted almost a year.

Burnley 1-2 Wolves: Tawanda Chirewa Seals Comeback as Clarets’ Turf Moor Crisis Deepens

Jamie Vardy Gives Burnley the Lead

Burnley started brightly and created several promising opportunities before breaking the deadlock in the 20th minute.

Jacob Bruun Larsen supplied the pass that sent Vardy through on goal, and the experienced striker finished confidently beyond Wolves goalkeeper José Sá to put the hosts ahead.

The goal was Vardy’s first for Burnley and his first in English football since May 2025, offering the home supporters hope that their side could finally end its frustrating run at Turf Moor.

Burnley continued to threaten and had opportunities to increase their advantage. However, their failure to convert that early pressure proved costly.

Fer López Punishes Burnley’s Defensive Mistake

Wolves drew level in the 39th minute after Burnley captain Kyle Walker lost possession near his own penalty area.

Sean Neave collected the loose ball and set up Fer López, who finished from close range, sending his effort inside the post to make it 1-1.

The equaliser changed the mood of the contest and gave the visitors renewed belief heading into the interval.

Burnley had enjoyed a promising opening period, but the defensive error meant they went into half-time without the advantage their earlier attacking play had suggested they might carry.

Chirewa Strikes to Complete Wolves’ Comeback

Burnley began the second half looking to regain the lead, with Bruun Larsen missing an opportunity to put the hosts back in front.

Wolves gradually grew into the contest and created chances of their own, forcing Burnley goalkeeper Grégoire Coudert into important saves.

The decisive moment arrived in the 72nd minute. Mateus Mané capitalised on a heavy touch from Burnley defender Igor Julio and helped create the opening for Chirewa, who had just entered the game as a substitute.

Chirewa took his opportunity and fired towards goal. Coudert got a hand to the effort but could not prevent it from crossing the line, giving Wolves a 2-1 lead.

Burnley pushed for an equaliser, but the hosts could not find another goal as Wolves held on for all three points.

Burnley’s Home Winless Run Reaches 21 Games

The defeat extended Burnley’s wait for a home league victory to 21 matches, a run stretching back to their 2-0 Premier League win over Leeds United on October 18, 2025.

Since that victory, the Clarets have recorded 11 defeats and 10 draws at Turf Moor, according to Sky Sports’ match report.

The latest setback also means the club’s winless streak will pass the one-year mark, increasing the pressure on the team to find a solution to its home struggles.

Burnley’s inability to turn promising spells into goals has been a recurring problem. Against Wolves, Vardy’s opener gave them a platform, but a costly defensive mistake and another concession after the break ultimately proved decisive.

What the Result Means for Wolves

For Wolves, the comeback provides an important lift after two consecutive defeats. López’s equaliser helped them recover from a difficult first half, while Chirewa’s contribution off the bench proved decisive.

The victory also demonstrated the visitors’ ability to take advantage of defensive mistakes and make their opportunities count when the game was finely balanced.

Burnley, meanwhile, must quickly address their home form if they are to build momentum in the Championship. Their performance offered encouragement in the opening stages, but the final result highlighted how costly individual errors can be.

With their wait for a league win at Turf Moor continuing, the Clarets will need a stronger defensive display and greater efficiency in front of goal to turn their fortunes around.
