Deontay Wilder could feature on Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua undercard

Former heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder could return to Britain for a high-profile appearance on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s long-awaited showdown with Anthony Joshua, according to reports published on Friday, October 9, 2026.

The proposed Fury-Joshua fight is scheduled for December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. Wilder’s possible inclusion would add another major name to an event expected to attract international attention.

According to boxing reporter Mike Coppinger of The Ring, a potential bout between Wilder and undefeated Australian cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia is being explored for the card. However, negotiations have not resulted in a confirmed agreement, and the final undercard has yet to be announced.

Wilder, 40, is a former World Boxing Council heavyweight champion known for his punching power. He last fought in April, when he defeated British heavyweight Derek Chisora by split decision in London.

A potential meeting with Opetaia would present a different challenge for the American. The Australian has established himself among the leading fighters at cruiserweight, and a move up to heavyweight would offer him an opportunity to test himself against a former world champion.

Wilder has a history with both Fury and Joshua. He fought Fury three times, drawing their first encounter before losing the next two bouts by stoppage. Despite years of speculation about a showdown with Joshua, the two British and American heavyweight rivals have never met in the ring.

Opetaia, meanwhile, has also been linked with other major fights, including a possible future contest against David Benavidez. Any agreement to face Wilder would therefore depend on negotiations among the fighters and their promotional teams.

The Fury-Joshua event is being promoted as one of the biggest boxing attractions of the year, with the main event expected to draw a global audience through Netflix. Organisers have yet to reveal the complete supporting card.

For now, Wilder’s participation remains a possibility rather than a done deal. Confirmation of his opponent and the rest of the undercard is expected when organisers release further details.
