Elena Rybakina delivered a dominant performance to defeat Leylah Fernandez 6–2, 6–2 in the final of the Ningbo Open on Sunday, successfully defending her title and claiming her first trophy since becoming world number one.

The top-seeded Kazakhstani defeated the Canadian in just 73 minutes on October 25, 2026, to secure her fourth title of the season and the 15th WTA singles trophy of her career.

The victory strengthened Rybakina’s position in the race to finish the year as the world’s top-ranked women’s tennis player, following a remarkable season that included Australian Open and US Open triumphs.

Rybakina Dominates Fernandez in Ningbo Final

Rybakina established control early in the opening set, using her powerful groundstrokes and aggressive shot-making to put Fernandez under pressure.

The decisive breakthrough came in the fifth game, when Rybakina broke the Canadian’s serve. She subsequently extended her advantage to 4–2 before applying further pressure to move within reach of the set.

Fernandez struggled to contain the world number one’s attacking play, and Rybakina eventually closed out the opening set 6–2 in approximately 38 minutes.

The defending champion maintained her intensity in the second set, continuing to force errors and create opportunities on Fernandez’s serve.

Although Fernandez attempted to mount a response, Rybakina remained composed during the important points. She secured another break to take a 2–1 lead before building a commanding advantage.

Rybakina then moved to 5–2 and served out the match on her first championship point, sealing another 6–2 set to retain the Ningbo crown.

Fourth Title of the Season for World Number One

The Ningbo victory marked another major achievement in Rybakina’s 2026 campaign.

She won the Australian Open earlier in the year before adding the US Open title in September. Her US Open success helped propel her to the top of the WTA rankings.

The Ningbo trophy was her fourth title of the season and her second consecutive championship at the Chinese tournament.

Rybakina had experienced setbacks at tournaments in Beijing and Wuhan before arriving in Ningbo. She also missed the Wuhan Open because of a foot injury, making her successful title defence a timely boost as the season approaches its conclusion.

The result also strengthened her bid to finish 2026 as the year-end world number one.

Fernandez Falls Short After Impressive Run

Fernandez entered the final hoping to claim her second title of the season, having won the Singapore Open in September.

The 30th-ranked Canadian had worked hard to reach the championship match, defeating Marie Bouzkova 6–3, 7–5 in the semifinals.

Her run through the tournament included several demanding matches, and she arrived in the final looking to add another significant trophy to her career record.

However, Rybakina’s power and consistency proved difficult to overcome. Fernandez was unable to generate enough sustained pressure to prevent the defending champion from controlling the match.

Despite the defeat, reaching the Ningbo final continued a strong period for Fernandez during the Asian swing of the WTA season.

Rybakina Looks Ahead to the Season’s Final Events

After the victory, Rybakina thanked the crowd for its support and described winning again in Ningbo as special.

Her successful title defence provides momentum as she turns her attention to the remaining tournaments on the calendar, including the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

The season-ending WTA Finals will also be a major focus as the leading players compete to conclude the year on a high note.

For Rybakina, the Ningbo triumph adds another achievement to an already successful season and strengthens her position as she pursues the year-end number-one ranking.

For Fernandez, the final offers valuable experience ahead of the remaining events of the season, despite missing out on the title.

Rybakina’s straight-sets victory ultimately underlined her dominance in Ningbo, where she has now won the championship in consecutive years.
