James Maddison Scores Stunning Goal as Tottenham End Premier League Winless Start

James Maddison marked his long-awaited return to Tottenham Hotspur’s starting line-up with a spectacular goal as Spurs defeated Coventry City 3-1 to secure their first Premier League victory of the 2026/27 season.

The England midfielder produced a superb curling finish in the 14th minute at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday, October 19, delivering a memorable moment after a lengthy spell disrupted by injuries.

The victory ended Tottenham’s 148-day wait for a Premier League win and lifted Roberto De Zerbi’s side off the bottom of the table.

James Maddison Stuns as Tottenham Beat Coventry 3-1

Maddison makes an emotional return

Maddison’s goal was particularly significant because it came in his first start for Tottenham in around 18 months.

The 29-year-old had endured a difficult recovery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury, followed by further setbacks that delayed his return to regular first-team football.

Against Coventry, he showed the attacking quality that had made him an important player for Spurs before his injury problems.

Maddison collected a pass from Mohammed Kudus and curled a first-time effort from around 20 yards into the top corner, giving goalkeeper Carl Rushworth little chance.

His goal brought a memorable moment for the midfielder and the home supporters, who have waited for him to return to full fitness.

After the match, Maddison said he wanted to demonstrate what he could offer the team after such a long absence and expressed his determination to contribute more in the coming weeks.

Coventry fight back after the break

Tottenham struggled to turn their early advantage into a comfortable lead, and Coventry punished them shortly after half-time.

Jack Rudoni equalised in the 49th minute, briefly raising the possibility of another frustrating result for the home side.

Spurs responded through Omar Marmoush, who restored their lead in the 58th minute with a powerful finish from outside the penalty area.

Coventry protested over the circumstances surrounding the goal, but it stood, leaving Tottenham back in front.

Ben Davies then settled the contest in stoppage time, scoring in the 96th minute to secure a crucial three points for De Zerbi’s team.

Dejan Kulusevski also returns

Maddison was not the only Tottenham player to celebrate a long-awaited comeback.

Dejan Kulusevski returned to action after 526 days on the sidelines, receiving a warm reception from the home crowd when he came on as a substitute.

The Swedish forward had also faced a difficult recovery from a serious knee injury, making his appearance another encouraging moment for Tottenham.

The returns of Maddison and Kulusevski could provide De Zerbi with additional creative options as he looks to improve the team’s results and restore confidence.

Their availability will be especially important as Tottenham attempt to build momentum following a difficult opening to the league campaign.

Tottenham look to build on their first win

The victory over Coventry gives Tottenham a much-needed boost, but consistency remains the next challenge.

Spurs had entered the match without a Premier League win this season, leaving them under pressure to respond. The 3-1 result moved them to 16th place with six points from seven matches, according to Reuters.

Maddison’s performance offered a reminder of the creativity and attacking threat he can bring when fit, while Marmoush and Davies also made decisive contributions.

Tottenham now face a demanding trip to Chelsea, where they will hope to build on the Coventry result and demonstrate that their first league victory can mark a turning point.

For Maddison, the immediate priority is to maintain his fitness and turn an emotional comeback into a sustained return to form. His stunning goal has given Spurs supporters fresh reason for optimism.
