Man City 2-4 PSG: Haaland Brace Not Enough as Maresca Suffers First Defeat in Front of Guardiola

Manchester City suffered their first defeat of the season after Paris Saint-Germain secured an impressive 4-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Despite Erling Haaland scoring twice in the second half, Enzo Maresca's side could not recover from a disastrous opening 45 minutes in which the visitors scored three times.

Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha put PSG firmly in control before the interval. Maghnes Akliouche added a fourth in the second half, ensuring that Haaland's brace would not inspire a complete comeback.

The result ended Maresca's eight-match winning run as Manchester City manager and gave former City boss Pep Guardiola a dramatic return to the Etihad, where he watched the match from the stands.

Man City 2-4 PSG: Haaland Brace Not Enough as Maresca Suffers First Defeat in Front of Guardiola

PSG Strike Twice in Two Minutes to Shock Man City

Manchester City began the contest looking to impose themselves on the European champions, but PSG quickly exposed weaknesses in the home side's defence.

Doué opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a long-range effort that beat goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The visitors struck again just two minutes later. A slick attacking move involving Doué and Dembélé ended with the French forward finishing to give PSG a 2-0 advantage.

City struggled to regain their composure as Luis Enrique's team continued to dominate possession and create dangerous opportunities.

Vitinha made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute, finishing from the edge of the area after Warren Zaïre-Emery helped create the opening.

By half-time, City faced a daunting task against a PSG side whose movement, pressing and clinical finishing had left the hosts struggling to cope.

Haaland Leads City's Second-Half Fightback

Maresca responded at the interval with tactical adjustments, and Manchester City returned with considerably more urgency.

Haaland reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute, giving the home supporters renewed hope of a comeback.

City pushed forward in search of another goal, creating several promising opportunities and forcing PSG to defend much deeper than they had in the first half.

However, just as the hosts appeared to be gaining momentum, PSG delivered another decisive blow.

Akliouche scored in the 62nd minute after Donnarumma failed to deal convincingly with the effort, restoring the visitors' three-goal advantage at 4-1.

Haaland struck again in the 75th minute, finishing to make it 4-2 and set up a tense closing period.

City continued attacking and came close to reducing the deficit further, but PSG held on to claim all three points.

Maresca Admits City Struggled Before Half-Time

The defeat marked Maresca's first loss as Manchester City manager after eight consecutive victories.

Speaking after the match, the Italian acknowledged that his side had struggled during the opening half, particularly after conceding twice in quick succession.

He said the early goals affected the team's confidence and disrupted its balance, making it difficult to respond against a side of PSG's quality.

However, Maresca was encouraged by City's second-half performance and believed his players created enough chances to earn a better result.

He also stressed that the team would learn from the experience and use the defeat as an opportunity to improve.

City's manager now faces the task of correcting the defensive problems exposed by PSG while preserving the attacking momentum that had helped his team enjoy a strong start to the campaign.

Guardiola Watches as Former Club Falls to PSG

Guardiola's presence added another storyline to an already eventful night at the Etihad Stadium.

The former Manchester City manager returned to the ground for the first time since leaving the club in May 2026.

He watched from the stands alongside senior City executives, including chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano.

The match was also significant because it was City's first home fixture since an independent commission found the club guilty of 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules.

Manchester City deny wrongdoing and are appealing the ruling.

The legal dispute has created uncertainty around the club, although Maresca and his players had initially responded positively on the pitch, including a 3-0 Premier League victory over Liverpool on the preceding Sunday.

Wednesday's defeat therefore interrupted City's winning momentum at a time when the club faces scrutiny both on and off the field.

PSG Show Why They Remain Champions League Contenders

PSG's performance demonstrated their ability to punish defensive mistakes and maintain attacking pressure against elite opposition.

Luis Enrique's team combined quick passing, intelligent movement and clinical finishing to establish its commanding first-half lead.

Although City improved significantly after the break, PSG did enough to withstand the comeback and protect their advantage.

The French club's victory strengthened its position in the Champions League league phase, while City were left to reflect on a performance that featured both defensive vulnerabilities and a spirited attacking response.

The result also provided a reminder that strong domestic form does not guarantee success against Europe's leading sides.

What Comes Next for Manchester City?

Manchester City must now turn their attention back to domestic competition and their next Premier League fixture against Ipswich.

Maresca will be hoping his players can quickly recover from the defeat and return to winning ways.

The manager's main challenge will be to ensure that the defensive lapses seen against PSG do not become a recurring problem, particularly as City continue competing on multiple fronts.

Haaland's two goals offered a positive note, but the defeat showed that City's attacking quality must be matched by greater defensive organisation if they are to compete consistently with Europe's strongest teams.

For PSG, the victory represents an important statement in their Champions League campaign. For City, it is a setback that Maresca will be expected to address as the season progresses.
