Police probe officers caught on hidden camera allegedly extorting Lagos dispatch rider

The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation after officers attached to the Makinde Divisional Headquarters were captured on video allegedly demanding money from a dispatch rider.

The incident came to public attention after a video showing the encounter circulated widely on social media. According to the footage, the officers stopped the rider and removed the key from his motorcycle before an alleged payment was made.

The dispatch rider, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly claimed that he was forced to pay ₦20,000 to the officers. However, the police command said the amount and other details of the alleged transaction had not been independently established.

The command confirmed that it was aware of the video and had begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The officers shown in the footage have also reported to the command headquarters for questioning.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai directed that the officers be interviewed as part of the investigation. The command said the process would determine whether any misconduct or extortion occurred.

The police have not announced any arrests or disciplinary measures against the officers at this stage. Authorities said appropriate action would be taken against anyone found culpable after the investigation is completed.

The incident comes amid renewed public attention on allegations of police extortion during stop-and-search operations in Lagos. Similar videos involving police officers have previously prompted investigations and disciplinary proceedings.

In March, the Lagos State Police Command also investigated allegations of extortion involving personnel of the Lagos State Task Force after a video circulated online.

The latest case has again raised questions about accountability and professional conduct during police operations. For now, the allegations remain under investigation, and no finding of misconduct has been formally made against the officers involved.

The Lagos Police Command said the public would be informed of further developments as the investigation progresses.
