Real Madrid are reportedly considering a move for Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay ahead of the January 2027 transfer window, raising the possibility of a reunion between the Scotland international and manager José Mourinho.
According to reports in The Sun, the Spanish giants have identified McTominay as a potential midfield addition and are monitoring his situation at Napoli. The reported interest comes amid uncertainty over the midfielder’s contract, with discussions about an improved deal said to be ongoing. Neither Real Madrid nor Napoli has officially confirmed a transfer agreement.
McTominay left Manchester United for Napoli in 2024 and quickly established himself as an important player in Italian football. His performances during Napoli’s 2024–25 Serie A title-winning campaign strengthened his reputation, with the midfielder contributing goals and physical presence from the middle of the pitch. He was also named Serie A’s Most Valuable Player for that season.
A potential move to Real Madrid would also bring McTominay back into contact with Mourinho, who coached him at Manchester United and gave him opportunities in the first team. Their previous working relationship could add an interesting dimension to the reported transfer, although there is no confirmation that Mourinho has personally requested the signing.
The midfielder’s future may depend partly on Napoli’s willingness to improve his contract and whether the clubs can agree on a transfer fee. Reports of interest from other sides mean Real Madrid could face competition if they decide to pursue the player.
McTominay has also recently been recovering from a medical procedure to treat a benign heart rhythm condition. Reuters reported on October 7 that Napoli had confirmed he was cleared to return to competitive football after further medical assessments and a return to full team training.
Real Madrid’s reported interest remains at the speculation stage, and there has been no public confirmation of a formal bid. The January transfer window will provide a clearer indication of whether the Spanish club intends to turn its reported interest into negotiations.
For now, McTominay remains a Napoli player, and any possible move will depend on the clubs’ decisions, the midfielder’s contract situation and whether a transfer can be agreed.
