Ryan Garcia Targets Teofimo Lopez Showdown After Brutal Knockout of Conor Benn

Ryan Garcia has set his sights on a blockbuster showdown with fellow American boxer Teofimo Lopez after delivering an emphatic second-round stoppage victory over Britain's Conor Benn in Las Vegas.

Garcia retained his WBC welterweight world title on September 12, 2026, with a dominant performance at the T-Mobile Arena. Immediately after the fight, the 28-year-old called for a unification bout against Lopez, who holds the WBA welterweight championship.

However, the proposed contest is not yet officially confirmed, with Lopez facing a mandatory title obligation against Britain's Jack Catterall that could affect negotiations.

The potential clash would bring together two American champions in a high-profile contest with the opportunity to unify major welterweight titles.

Garcia Makes a Statement Against Benn

Garcia delivered a devastating performance against Benn, dropping the British challenger with a powerful right hand before following up with a barrage of punches that forced the referee to stop the contest.

The stoppage came at one minute and 25 seconds of the second round, giving Garcia a successful first defence of his WBC welterweight title.

Benn entered the contest hoping to establish himself among the leading fighters in the division, but Garcia's speed, timing and accuracy proved decisive.

Following the victory, Garcia acknowledged Benn's willingness to compete but suggested the Briton needed more experience before taking on opponents at that level.

The American's victory strengthened his position in the welterweight division and allowed him to turn his attention towards another major challenge.

Garcia Calls for a Unification Fight With Lopez

Garcia wasted little time identifying his preferred next opponent, calling out Lopez, who was present at ringside for the Benn fight.

“I want to unify against Teofimo. I think that's the move,” Garcia said after his victory, according to Sky Sports.

The proposed matchup would pit Garcia's WBC title against Lopez's WBA championship, creating an opportunity for one fighter to emerge with two major world titles.

Lopez won the WBA welterweight title by defeating Rolando Romero via majority decision on August 22, 2026. He has also expressed interest in facing Garcia, with both fighters publicly indicating that they want the contest to happen.

A meeting between the champions would carry significant commercial appeal, given their profiles and the possibility of a competitive rivalry developing during the build-up.

Jack Catterall Could Complicate the Plans

Despite the interest from both champions, boxing politics could delay the proposed showdown.

On September 22, the World Boxing Association ordered Lopez to defend his title against mandatory challenger Jack Catterall. The organisation gave the parties a 30-day negotiation period, running until the close of business on October 22, 2026, to reach an agreement.

The order means Lopez cannot simply ignore his mandatory obligation without risking consequences for his championship status.

A deal involving Catterall, a possible step-aside arrangement or another resolution would be needed if Lopez is to pursue the Garcia fight without first completing the required defence.

The situation leaves uncertainty around the timing of the proposed unification bout, even though Garcia and Lopez have both expressed a desire to meet.

What a Garcia-Lopez Fight Would Mean

A contest between Garcia and Lopez would be one of the most closely watched potential matchups in the welterweight division.

Garcia has built his reputation around his speed, powerful left hook and ability to generate attention outside the ring. His victory over Benn demonstrated his capacity to finish a major fight quickly, while also keeping his world title.

Lopez brings his own championship credentials and experience against high-level opposition. A meeting between the pair would test Garcia against a different style and give both men the chance to add another major title to their record.

The fight could also open the door to further unification contests in a division where several championship belts remain held by different fighters.

However, the immediate priority remains resolving Lopez's mandatory title obligation before a date or venue for the proposed showdown can be confirmed.

When Could Garcia Face Lopez?

Garcia has expressed interest in a major fight against Lopez, with Cinco de Mayo weekend in May 2027 discussed as a possible target.

That timing could give Lopez an opportunity to address the WBA requirement first, depending on negotiations and the outcome of any mandatory defence.

Garcia has also been linked with the possibility of taking a tune-up fight before a larger contest, although no official agreement for his next appearance has been announced.

For now, the American's immediate objective is clear: he wants Lopez next. Whether boxing's championship obligations allow the fight to happen on the desired schedule remains to be seen.

The potential showdown has the ingredients for a major event, but fans will have to wait for formal confirmation before treating it as a signed and scheduled fight.
