Several feared dead as helicopter crashes in Ondo

Several people are feared dead after a helicopter crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday.

The incident reportedly occurred in a swampy area opposite the Naval Base in the coastal community, causing panic among residents. Details of the crash remained limited as authorities worked to establish what happened.

Ilaje Local Government Chairman, Maurice Oripelaye, confirmed that a helicopter had crashed in the area. He said military equipment was found at the scene, while the aircraft was reportedly burnt beyond recognition.    

However, Oripelaye said authorities could not immediately determine how many people were aboard the helicopter or confirm their condition.

The identity of the aircraft and its operator also remained unclear. There was no immediate official confirmation from the military identifying the helicopter or stating whether it was involved in a military operation.

The Ondo State Police Command said details were still emerging and urged residents to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information.

Reports from the area indicated that residents and officials were working to secure the crash site and assess the extent of the incident.

The cause of the crash had not been established at the time of reporting. Authorities are expected to provide further information as the assessment and investigation continue.

For now, the number of casualties remains unconfirmed, and reports that several people may have died should be treated as preliminary until officially verified.
