Zinedine Zidane’s France were held to a 1-1 draw by Italy in the Nations League on Friday, while Kevin De Bruyne scored twice as Belgium defeated Türkiye 3-0.
The result ended Zidane’s perfect start as France coach after victories over Türkiye and Belgium in his opening two matches. France remain top of Group A1 with seven points, with Belgium on six and Italy on four.
France took the lead in the 55th minute when Michael Olise produced a curling effort from about 20 metres that went in off the crossbar. The goal appeared to have put the hosts on course for another victory under Zidane.
Italy responded through defender Alessandro Bastoni, who took advantage of a defensive mistake before firing a low shot into the corner to level the game.
France had opportunities to regain the lead, with Olise and Désiré Doué among those threatening the Italian defence. However, Italy held firm and secured a point in Zidane’s first home match in charge.
France were reduced to 10 players late in the game after Dayot Upamecano was sent off, adding further difficulty for the home side as they attempted to find a winner.
In Belgium, De Bruyne delivered a standout performance as the 35-year-old midfielder scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Türkiye in Liège. He opened the scoring after 10 minutes following a combination with Dodi Lukébakio before adding his second after the break.
Romelu Lukaku completed Belgium’s victory, while Lukébakio twice struck the post. The result gives Belgium six points from their opening three matches in the group.
De Bruyne said after the match that he still feels capable of contributing to the national team and wants to lead by example for Belgium’s younger players. He has previously said he intends to continue playing internationally while he remains motivated and physically fit.
The Nations League campaign will now continue with France looking to maintain their position at the top of the group, while Belgium will aim to build on their latest victory as the competition progresses.
