Electoral Commission Accepts ADC's Presidential Ticket and Hundreds of Party Nominations Ahead of 2027 Polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised the nomination of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, alongside 470 other candidates submitted by the party for various elective positions across Nigeria.
The development marks a significant milestone for the ADC as it strengthens its preparations for the 2027 elections. INEC's recognition follows the successful submission and verification of the party's nomination particulars through its dedicated online portal, a process required under Nigeria's electoral framework.
According to the electoral commission, the list includes candidates contesting for the presidency, governorships, the National Assembly, and state legislative seats. Atiku Abubakar heads the party's presidential ticket, while former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi is recognised as the ADC's vice-presidential candidate.
The recognition effectively confirms that the candidates have met the procedural requirements for nomination at this stage of the electoral process. However, INEC noted that recognition does not prevent any legal challenges that may arise before the elections, as disputes relating to nominations remain subject to judicial review under Nigerian law.
The ADC has described the recognition as a major boost for its campaign, saying it demonstrates compliance with the Electoral Act and affirms the party's readiness to compete nationwide. Party officials expressed confidence that the candidates would present a strong alternative to voters seeking a change in leadership during the 2027 general elections.
Atiku, who previously served as Nigeria's Vice President, emerged as the ADC's presidential flag bearer after winning the party's primary election earlier this year. His emergence reflected a broader opposition realignment aimed at mounting a formidable challenge in the next presidential contest.
Political observers say INEC's acceptance of the ADC's nominations provides greater clarity to the evolving electoral landscape, as major political parties intensify campaigns, unveil policy agendas, and mobilise supporters ahead of the nationwide polls.
With the nomination process progressing, attention is expected to shift toward campaign activities, voter engagement, and compliance with electoral regulations as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections. INEC has reiterated its commitment to conducting a transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral process for all registered political parties.
