The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has warned residents of Kano State against taking shelter beneath telecommunications masts during thunderstorms, urging the public to observe basic safety precautions as the 2026 rainy season continues.

The advisory comes amid increased rainfall and severe weather conditions affecting several parts of northern Nigeria, with emergency agencies warning that lightning strikes, strong winds and flash floods pose significant risks to lives and property.

Avoid Dangerous Shelter During Storms

The NSCDC advised residents to stay away from telecommunications masts, electric poles, isolated trees and other tall metallic structures during thunderstorms, noting that such locations may increase the risk of lightning-related accidents.

The Corps also encouraged people to seek shelter inside sturdy buildings whenever storms begin rather than remaining outdoors or gathering beneath exposed structures.

Additional Safety Measures

Residents were also encouraged to:

• Stay indoors during heavy thunderstorms whenever possible.
• Avoid standing in open fields during lightning activity.
• Refrain from touching exposed electrical installations.
• Follow weather alerts issued by relevant authorities.
• Report damaged infrastructure or emergency situations to security agencies.

The NSCDC said public awareness remains one of the most effective ways to reduce weather-related casualties during the rainy season.

Flood Risks Remain High

The warning coincides with broader concerns over flooding across Kano State.

Earlier this year, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) identified 178 communities across 28 local government areas in Kano as being at moderate risk of flooding during the 2026 rainy season and urged residents in vulnerable locations to remain vigilant and comply with evacuation advisories where necessary.

Protecting Critical Infrastructure

The NSCDC has also intensified efforts to safeguard telecommunications infrastructure in Kano, previously warning contractors and developers against damaging fibre-optic cables and other critical national assets during construction activities.

Officials say protecting telecommunications infrastructure remains essential because disruptions can affect emergency communications, banking services, internet connectivity and other critical sectors.

Public Urged to Stay Alert

As the rainy season progresses, the NSCDC called on residents to prioritise personal safety, monitor official weather forecasts and avoid unnecessary exposure during severe storms.

Authorities say observing simple safety measures can significantly reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities associated with lightning, flooding and other extreme weather events.
