The Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., was temporarily closed on Friday as sweltering temperatures and dangerous heat conditions affected Fourth of July holiday celebrations across the eastern United States.
Organizers suspended activities during the afternoon after temperatures climbed above 100°F (38°C), with the heat index reaching as high as 111–115°F (44–46°C). The closure was announced as a precaution to protect visitors, staff, volunteers and performers. The fair was expected to reopen later in the evening as temperatures eased.
Officials introduced additional safety measures, including free water stations, cooling tents and misting areas, while urging attendees to stay hydrated, seek shade and watch for signs of heat-related illness.
The National Weather Service placed more than 185 million people under heat alerts as the prolonged heat wave spread across much of the central and eastern United States.
The extreme weather also led to the cancellation or postponement of numerous Independence Day parades, concerts and community celebrations in several states.
Despite the disruptions, many major Fourth of July events, including evening concerts and fireworks displays in Washington, are expected to proceed with enhanced safety precautions.
Health officials are advising anyone attending outdoor celebrations to limit prolonged sun exposure, drink plenty of water and check on children, older adults and other vulnerable individuals during the ongoing heat wave.
Emergency services remain on alert throughout the holiday weekend as forecasters warn that unusually high temperatures could persist in parts of the country.
