Nigerian Rapper Says His Civic Advocacy Should Not Be Mistaken for Political Endorsement
Nigerian rapper, actor and activist Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has dismissed claims that he endorsed any political candidate during the 2023 general elections, saying his public comments were aimed at encouraging good governance rather than supporting a particular politician.
In a statement addressing the rumours, Falz said he has never publicly endorsed any politician or political party, urging Nigerians to distinguish between civic advocacy and political endorsement.
According to the award-winning entertainer, his longstanding calls for accountability, transparency and responsible leadership have sometimes been misinterpreted as support for specific political figures.
"I have never endorsed any politician. My position has always been about advocating for good governance, justice and accountability," Falz said.
The musician explained that his activism is driven by his desire to see Nigeria progress through credible leadership, respect for the rule of law and policies that improve the lives of citizens.
Falz has been a prominent voice on social and governance issues, using his music and public platforms to speak out against corruption, police brutality and other national concerns. He played a visible role during the #EndSARS movement, where he consistently called for reforms within Nigeria's security sector.
He emphasized that citizens have the right to participate in political discussions and advocate for national development without being labelled as supporters of any individual or political party.
The clarification comes amid renewed social media discussions about the 2023 elections, with various online posts claiming that the entertainer backed a particular presidential candidate. Falz said such claims are inaccurate and should not be attributed to him without evidence.
Political analysts note that public figures often face scrutiny over their political views, especially during election periods, as comments on governance can sometimes be interpreted as endorsements.
Falz reaffirmed his commitment to promoting justice, accountability and active citizenship, encouraging Nigerians to remain engaged in democratic processes while holding elected officials accountable for their actions.
His remarks have generated discussion across social media, with supporters praising the clarification and reiterating the importance of distinguishing between advocacy for better governance and formal political endorsements.
