Swift Response Prevents Casualties as Blaze Engulfs Tanker in Ikotun 
A major disaster was averted in the early hours of Thursday after a gas-laden tanker caught fire along Abaranje Road near Ola Farm Bus Stop in the Ikotun area of Lagos State, prompting a rapid response from emergency agencies.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the tanker engulfed in flames. Firefighters, working alongside the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, quickly brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby homes, businesses and passing vehicles. No fatalities or injuries were recorded.
LASEMA spokesperson Olawale Afolabi said preliminary investigations indicated that the tanker was travelling at high speed when it hit a road bump. The impact reportedly caused the driver to lose control, leading to a tyre burst and an immediate fire outbreak.
Emergency personnel secured the area, extinguished the fire and ensured that the gas cargo did not ignite further or trigger a larger explosion. The swift intervention helped minimize damage and restore safety along the busy roadway.
Authorities also implemented traffic control measures around the scene to allow emergency operations to proceed safely while reducing congestion. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes until the affected section of the road was declared safe for normal traffic.
Officials have urged tanker drivers and other heavy-duty vehicle operators to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution, particularly on roads with uneven surfaces, emphasizing that compliance with safety regulations is essential to preventing similar incidents.
The latest fire adds to a series of tanker-related accidents recorded in Nigeria in recent months, reinforcing calls for stricter enforcement of road safety standards, regular vehicle inspections and improved training for drivers transporting hazardous materials.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, while authorities continue to assess the circumstances that led to the fire and review measures aimed at reducing the risk of future tanker accidents.
