Nigerian Bar Association Says Preparations Are Complete as Members Head to Polls
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has declared that there will be no postponement or reversal of its scheduled Saturday national election, affirming that all preparations have been concluded for members to elect new national officers.
The association's leadership made the position known amid speculation and calls from some members for the election to be delayed over concerns relating to the electoral process. However, the NBA maintained that the election would proceed as planned in accordance with its constitution and approved electoral timetable.
According to the association, the Electoral Committee has put in place the necessary arrangements to ensure a transparent, credible and peaceful election. Members of the legal profession across Nigeria are expected to participate in the voting process to elect officials who will steer the affairs of the association for the next administration.
NBA officials emphasized that changing the election date at this stage would disrupt months of planning and undermine the association's commitment to democratic governance and institutional stability.
The association urged all eligible members to participate peacefully and responsibly, encouraging candidates and their supporters to respect the outcome of the election and utilize established legal and internal dispute resolution mechanisms where necessary.
The NBA noted that the credibility of its electoral process is essential to maintaining public confidence in the legal profession and reinforcing the association's commitment to the rule of law, accountability and transparency.
Observers within the legal community say the election comes at a critical time, with the incoming leadership expected to address issues affecting the legal profession, including judicial reforms, the welfare of lawyers, access to justice and the protection of the rule of law.
The association also reassured members that measures have been implemented to safeguard the integrity of the voting process and ensure that all eligible lawyers are able to cast their votes in line with the established guidelines.
As the election approaches, candidates have continued to campaign on various reform agendas, while members look forward to choosing leaders who will shape the future direction of one of Nigeria's most influential professional bodies.
With the NBA leadership reiterating that there is "no going back" on the scheduled poll, attention now turns to Saturday's election, where thousands of lawyers across the country are expected to participate in selecting the association's next national executives.
