Russia launched a major overnight ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, with multiple explosions reported across the Ukrainian capital as air defence systems were activated to intercept incoming missiles.

Ukrainian military officials said air raid sirens sounded throughout Kyiv after the Air Force detected ballistic missile launches targeting the city. Residents were urged to seek shelter as explosions echoed across several districts during the attack.

According to local authorities, air defence units intercepted a number of the incoming missiles, but debris from intercepted projectiles fell in several parts of the capital, causing damage to residential buildings, commercial properties and public infrastructure. Emergency services were deployed to affected areas to assess the situation and assist residents.

Officials said preliminary reports indicated that several people were injured, although the full extent of casualties and damage was still being verified. Firefighters worked through the night to extinguish blazes sparked by falling missile debris, while rescue teams searched damaged buildings for anyone who might have been trapped.

The latest assault is one of the largest ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv in recent months and comes amid continued Russian strikes targeting Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. Military authorities said the attack involved multiple ballistic missiles launched in coordinated waves, designed to overwhelm Ukraine's air defence systems.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strike, describing it as another deliberate attack on civilians and civilian infrastructure. He renewed calls for Ukraine's international partners to strengthen the country's air defence capabilities and continue providing military and humanitarian assistance.

Russia has not immediately commented on the latest strike. Moscow has consistently maintained that its military operations target military facilities and strategic infrastructure, while Ukraine and its allies accuse Russia of carrying out indiscriminate attacks that have resulted in civilian casualties.

The renewed missile barrage comes as fighting continues along several front lines in eastern and southern Ukraine, where both sides have intensified military operations. Analysts warn that long-range missile and drone attacks remain a central feature of the conflict, posing ongoing risks to civilians far from the battlefield.

The United Nations and several Western governments have repeatedly called for the protection of civilians and respect for international humanitarian law, while urging renewed diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

As emergency crews continue clearing debris and assessing the damage, Ukrainian authorities have advised residents to remain alert to further air raid warnings, noting that the security situation remains highly volatile. The overnight attack underscores the continuing intensity of the war and the persistent threat facing Ukraine's major cities.
