Proposals to build data centres in space—an idea associated with companies led by Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos—have drawn sharp criticism from environmental experts, who warn that such projects could have far-reaching consequences for Earth's atmosphere, space environment and long-term sustainability.

Supporters of orbital data centres argue that relocating energy-intensive computing infrastructure into space could reduce pressure on terrestrial power grids, take advantage of continuous solar energy and lower the environmental footprint of traditional land-based facilities. The concept has gained attention as global demand for artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and digital storage continues to surge.

However, scientists and environmental researchers caution that the benefits may be outweighed by significant ecological costs.

One of the primary concerns is the dramatic increase in rocket launches that would be required to transport construction materials, servers and maintenance equipment into orbit. Experts note that rocket emissions release soot, carbon dioxide and other pollutants into the upper atmosphere, where they can have a disproportionate impact on climate and ozone chemistry.

Researchers also warn that deploying large-scale data centres in orbit could worsen the growing problem of space debris, increasing the risk of collisions that threaten satellites, space stations and future missions. A major collision involving orbital infrastructure could generate thousands of fragments, creating long-lasting hazards for spacecraft operating in low-Earth orbit.

Another concern involves the eventual disposal of aging orbital facilities. While some structures could be safely deorbited and burn up in Earth's atmosphere, experts say repeated re-entries of large artificial structures may release metallic particles and other materials whose long-term environmental effects remain poorly understood.

Critics further question whether constructing and maintaining data centres in space would be economically or environmentally efficient when compared with improving renewable-powered facilities on Earth. They argue that advances in energy-efficient computing, liquid cooling systems and cleaner electricity generation may provide more practical solutions to the growing demand for digital infrastructure.

Industry advocates, however, contend that technological innovation could address many of these challenges. They point to reusable rockets, more sustainable launch technologies and improved orbital debris management systems as developments that may reduce the environmental impact of future space-based infrastructure.

The debate comes as global investment in artificial intelligence continues to drive unprecedented demand for computing capacity. Data centres already account for a growing share of global electricity consumption, prompting governments and technology companies to explore alternative energy sources and innovative infrastructure models.

Space agencies and regulators have yet to establish comprehensive international rules governing large-scale commercial data centres in orbit. Experts say any future projects would require extensive environmental assessments, international cooperation and robust safety standards before becoming a reality.

While space-based data centres remain largely conceptual, the discussion highlights the broader challenge of balancing technological advancement with environmental protection. Scientists emphasize that careful planning and rigorous scientific evaluation will be essential to ensure that future innovations do not create new risks for the planet or the space environment.
