Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium, as substitute Mikel Merino scored a late winner to settle a closely contested quarter-final.

The victory extends Spain's unbeaten run and sets up a blockbuster semi-final against France.

Spain took the lead in the 30th minute through Fabián Ruiz, but Belgium responded before halftime when Charles De Ketelaere found the equalizer, ending Spain's streak of clean sheets at the tournament.

With the match seemingly headed for extra time, Merino came off the bench and struck in the 88th minute after Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens spilled a long-range effort, giving Spain a decisive lead.

Merino had also scored the winning goal against Portugal in the Round of 16, continuing his habit of delivering in crucial knockout matches.

Spain held on through the closing minutes to secure a place in the semi-finals, where they will meet France in one of the tournament's most anticipated clashes.
