The Federal Government has given a committee 90 days to prepare a comprehensive National Threat Assessment and a five-year Strategic Defence Operations Plan aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.

President Bola Tinubu directed the committee to identify Nigeria’s major security threats, assess their urgency and develop clear operational priorities for the military and other security agencies.
The plan will also identify equipment and capability gaps, resource requirements and an implementation timetable, with the goal of improving coordination among defence, intelligence and security agencies.
The committee includes the National Security Adviser, defence ministers, the Chief of Defence Staff, the service chiefs and the heads of the DSS and National Intelligence Agency. The Special Adviser on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka Famadewa, will coordinate the process.
Once approved, the strategy is expected to guide Nigeria’s medium-term defence operations, spending and procurement, ensuring resources are directed towards clearly identified national security priorities.
The initiative comes as the government seeks stronger coordination and a more unified response to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats facing the country.
