Osun Poll: Adeleke's Campaign Warns Against Political Violence Ahead of Governorship Election

Imole Campaign Council Urges Security Agencies to Ensure Peaceful, Credible August 15 Poll                                                 

                       

The Imole Campaign Council, the campaign organisation supporting Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has warned against rising political violence and intimidation ahead of the August 15, 2026, governorship election, calling on security agencies to safeguard lives and guarantee a peaceful electoral process.

In a statement issued by the council's spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, the campaign expressed concern over reports of alleged violence and intimidation in parts of the state, urging law enforcement agencies to act decisively against anyone seeking to disrupt the election.

Appeal for Peaceful Election

The campaign council said intelligence and reports from communities across Osun suggested that residents were becoming increasingly worried about alleged politically motivated attacks and intimidation.

It urged the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to remain neutral and ensure that every eligible voter can participate freely without fear.

According to the council, the credibility of the governorship election depends on maintaining peace before, during and after the vote.

Confidence in Adeleke's Performance

The Imole Campaign Council maintained that Governor Adeleke's administration has delivered visible achievements in infrastructure, workers' welfare, education and healthcare, expressing confidence that voters would support his re-election bid.

The council argued that the election should be decided by the electorate through the ballot box rather than by violence or intimidation.

Security Agencies Already on Alert

The warning comes amid broader efforts by security agencies to prevent unrest ahead of the governorship election.

Earlier this month, the Inspector-General of Police met with Governor Adeleke, political parties and other stakeholders, warning all political actors against violence and urging them to conduct peaceful campaigns.

Civil society organisations and election observers have also identified several local government areas as requiring heightened security because of previous reports of political tension.

APC Has Also Called for Peace

The warning from Adeleke's campaign follows similar appeals from opposition figures.

Last week, APC governorship candidate Bola Oyebamiji assured voters of a peaceful election and stated that no one would be allowed to intimidate citizens participating in the poll.

Election Scheduled for August 15

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed August 15, 2026, for the Osun State governorship election.

With campaigns entering their final stages, political parties, security agencies and election observers continue to stress the importance of peaceful conduct, urging supporters to reject violence and allow the democratic process to determine the outcome of the poll.
