Tokyo Protests Putin’s Visit as Ukraine Steps Up Long-Range Strikes 
Japan has strongly protested Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the Kuril Islands, territory claimed by both Russia and Japan.
Putin’s visit to Iturup, the first by the Russian leader to the disputed islands, prompted Tokyo to lodge a formal protest. Japan considers the southern Kurils to be its territory and has long opposed Russia’s control of the islands.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to target Russia’s energy infrastructure as part of its campaign to weaken Moscow’s ability to finance and sustain the war.
Ukrainian drone strikes have repeatedly hit Russian oil refineries and fuel facilities, with some plants forced to reduce or suspend operations. The attacks have contributed to growing pressure on Russia’s fuel supply and refinery capacity.
The developments come as the war continues to affect civilians on both sides. The UN said 437 civilians were killed and 2,610 injured in Ukraine during July, making it the deadliest month for civilians since May 2022.
For ordinary people, the continued attacks mean more uncertainty over security, fuel supplies and the prospects for an end to the war.
