The Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.
Nigeria fell behind in the first half but recovered through debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor to secure three points in Group L. The result also gave coach Eric Chelle a positive start to the qualifying campaign.
1. Ilenikhena made an immediate impact
George Ilenikhena enjoyed a memorable senior debut for Nigeria after scoring the equaliser in first-half stoppage time.
The forward showed composure to finish after receiving a pass from Alex Iwobi, restoring parity after Madagascar had taken the lead in the 16th minute. His goal provided Nigeria with an important boost heading into the interval.
2. Usor proved decisive from the bench
Moses Usor also made his Super Eagles debut and quickly became the match-winner.
Introduced in the second half, the LASK forward produced a strong individual run before finding the net in the 65th minute. His goal completed Nigeria's comeback and demonstrated the impact Chelle was able to get from his substitutes.
3. Nwabali justified his return
Stanley Nwabali returned to the starting lineup and made an important contribution to Nigeria's victory.
The Chippa United goalkeeper produced a crucial save early in the second half when Madagascar threatened to extend its advantage. His intervention helped keep the Super Eagles in control of the contest.
4. The second half was much stronger
Nigeria struggled to impose itself during portions of the opening half, particularly after Madagascar's early goal. However, Chelle's side improved after the break and created greater pressure on the visitors.
The Super Eagles eventually found the winning goal and continued to create opportunities, although they were unable to add a third goal. Tolu Arokodare also struck the post as Nigeria looked to put the result beyond doubt.
5. Experience and new faces combined well
The match also highlighted the blend of established players and newcomers in Chelle's squad.
Alex Iwobi played a key creative role in the comeback, while Wilfred Ndidi provided experience in midfield. Meanwhile, Ilenikhena and Usor both marked their first senior appearances with goals. Moses Simon also reached 100 appearances for Nigeria after coming on as a substitute, joining an exclusive group of Super Eagles players to reach that milestone.
Nigeria now have three points from their opening Group L match and will travel to face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29. Madagascar, meanwhile, are scheduled to host Tanzania on the same day.
