The Jigawa State House of Assembly has confirmed receiving the 2026 Constitution Amendment Bill transmitted by the National Assembly and has pledged to complete its consideration within the stipulated period.
The Speaker of the House, Haruna Dangyatim, disclosed this on Friday during an interactive session with journalists at the Assembly Complex in Dutse.
Dangyatim said the bill was transmitted to the state legislature as part of the constitutional amendment process and assured that Jigawa would take the necessary legislative steps before the end of September.
According to the Speaker, the House has 30 days from the date it received the National Assembly's communication to complete its consideration and communicate its position.
“We have received the Constitution Amendment Bill from the National Assembly, and I want to assure you that we will do the needful before the deadline,” Dangyatim said.
He disclosed that a committee had been constituted to examine the proposed amendments and make recommendations after considering their possible implications for the people of Jigawa State.
The Speaker said the House would also consult relevant stakeholders, including traditional rulers, civil society organisations and professional bodies, before reaching its position on the proposals.
The National Assembly transmitted the constitutional alteration bill to the 36 state Houses of Assembly on September 16. The transmission was made pursuant to Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution, which requires state legislative approval for constitutional alterations.
The National Assembly has clarified, however, that the 30-day period communicated to the state assemblies is an administrative timeframe rather than a constitutional deadline. It also said the specific bill transmitted at this stage is the proposed constitutional alteration establishing State Police Services.
Dangyatim said transparency and the interests of both Jigawa State and Nigeria would guide the Assembly's consideration of the bill as lawmakers proceed with the process.
The Jigawa Assembly's next steps will therefore involve committee review, stakeholder consultations and consideration by the full House before its resolution is communicated to the National Assembly.
