Apple's New CEO Makes Bold Bet on £1,999 Folding iPhone

Apple has made one of its biggest design changes in years with the launch of the iPhone Duo, the company's first foldable smartphone and the headline product unveiled by new CEO John Ternus.

Ternus, who took over as Apple's chief executive from Tim Cook on September 1, used his first major product event to introduce the book-style device. The launch marks a significant change for the iPhone after years of largely familiar designs.

The iPhone Duo starts at £1,999 in the UK for the 256GB model, making it Apple's most expensive iPhone. The price rises further for models with additional storage, reaching £3,199 for the 2TB version.

When opened, the device features a 7.6-inch internal display, while a 5.4-inch screen is available when the phone is folded. Apple says the design is intended to combine the portability of a smartphone with a larger display suitable for multitasking, entertainment and productivity.

The Duo is powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chip and includes a custom hinge, titanium components and a dual-battery system. Apple has also added features designed specifically for the foldable format, including enhanced multitasking and support for Apple Pencil.

The launch represents a major gamble for Ternus because Apple is entering a foldable market where competitors such as Samsung have already spent years developing and selling devices. Reuters reported that analysts expect Apple's arrival to significantly increase competition in the category.

Apple is betting that its large customer base, software ecosystem and emphasis on hardware integration will persuade consumers to pay a premium for the new form factor. The company has also highlighted its approach to artificial intelligence and privacy as part of its wider product strategy under Ternus.

Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are scheduled to begin on October 16, with the device becoming available from October 23 in the UK and several other markets.

For Ternus, the launch provides an early test of his leadership and Apple's ability to create a new growth opportunity beyond the traditional iPhone design. The response to the £1,999 device could help determine whether Apple's foldable strategy becomes a major success or remains a premium niche product.
