Johnny Fisher believes there is a strong possibility that he could face former world title challenger Dillian Whyte next if he gets past Michael Pirotton in their heavyweight clash this weekend.
The popular British heavyweight is set to fight Pirotton at London’s Copper Box Arena on Saturday, September 26, with the bout being broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Fisher has previously been linked with a potential fight against former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder. However, he now says a domestic showdown with Whyte could be a realistic option.
“Of course. Why not? That’s a great name. It would be an honour,” Fisher told Sky Sports when asked about fighting Whyte. He added that Whyte was someone he had looked up to during his own rise through boxing.
The 35-year-old Fisher said the appeal of facing established heavyweights such as Whyte and Wilder is connected to their experience and profiles, while a fight against either would also represent a significant step forward in his career.
“I’ve got a good chance of getting someone like Dillian Whyte,” Fisher said, making it clear that discussions about his next opponent remain dependent on what happens against Pirotton.
Fisher has also addressed speculation about Wilder, describing the former champion as a “modern great” because of his knockout record. He previously said there had been no agreement for a fight with Wilder, explaining that the idea had been discussed but was never formally completed.
For now, Fisher is concentrating on Pirotton and says new trainer Tony Sims has been helping him improve his technical skills without taking away the aggressive style that has made him popular with his supporters.
“I’m a heavyweight boxer and first and foremost I’m an aggressive, front-foot, combination-punching heavyweight,” Fisher said. He added that Sims was helping him refine those qualities rather than completely changing his approach.
A victory over Pirotton would therefore put Fisher in position to pursue another high-profile heavyweight fight. While Whyte and Wilder remain possibilities mentioned by Fisher, neither matchup has been confirmed.
Fisher previously described himself as being potentially only “two fights away” from a major opportunity, reflecting his belief that his profile and entertaining style could help accelerate his rise in the heavyweight division.
