Manchester United Begin Champions League Return With 4-0 Win Over Sabah

Manchester United made a winning return to the Champions League with a convincing 4-0 victory over Sabah FK at Old Trafford, giving Michael Carrick's side an ideal start to their European campaign.

United took control before half-time after a relatively cautious opening. The hosts then struck twice in the closing stages of the first half. Bruno Fernandes doubled United's advantage before Benjamin Sesko added a third just before the interval, giving the striker another important goal as he continues to establish himself in Carrick's attack.

Sesko's goal was particularly significant after he was handed his first start of the season in the No. 9 position. His performance could strengthen his case for another starting opportunity, with United preparing for Sunday's Manchester derby against Manchester City.

Sabah, making their Champions League debut, struggled to contain United's attacking quality despite showing plenty of effort. The Azerbaijani champions had opportunities to threaten but were unable to turn them into goals.

United continued to control the match after the break, with Lisandro Martínez completing the scoring in the 67th minute. The defence also maintained a clean sheet, allowing Carrick to celebrate a comfortable opening-night victory.

The result marks an encouraging European comeback for United after their previous Champions League campaign in 2023-24 ended with a disappointing group-stage exit. Carrick's team can now turn their attention to domestic matters and Sunday's meeting with Manchester City.

For Sabah, the defeat brought a difficult end to an historic night for the club. The Azerbaijani side reached the main stage after winning their domestic league and progressing through qualifying, making their appearance at Old Trafford a landmark moment despite the heavy loss.

United will hope the victory provides momentum for a demanding period ahead, while Sesko's latest goal gives Carrick another positive selection decision to consider as the season develops.
