One person has died and 11 others are missing after torrential rainfall triggered a mudslide in Jiangxi Province, China, local authorities said.
The landslide struck at about 4 a.m. on Saturday in Gaoping Town, located in Suichuan County, after heavy rain associated with Typhoon Saudel. The disaster damaged 12 houses in the area, according to the county authorities.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that more than 10 people were trapped after the mudslide hit the town, prompting emergency response efforts as authorities searched for those still unaccounted for.
The incident comes as parts of southeastern China experience heavy rainfall linked to Typhoon Saudel, increasing the risk of flooding, landslides and other weather-related emergencies.
Rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate the missing people and assess the extent of the damage. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as search and rescue operations continue.
The disaster highlights the dangers posed by intense rainfall in mountainous areas, where saturated ground can quickly become unstable and trigger mudslides.
