Suspected terrorists have attacked the convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, along the Kareto-Damasak Road in northern Borno.

The attack reportedly occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Thursday while Gubio and members of his entourage were travelling to Damasak as part of an appreciation tour following his emergence as the party’s candidate.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident on Friday, saying no member of the convoy was killed or injured. Police spokesman ASP Nahum Daso said the attackers, suspected to be Boko Haram or ISWAP terrorists, were repelled by combined security forces.
According to the police, tactical operatives responded after the convoy came under attack involving an improvised explosive device and rocket-propelled grenades. The security team reportedly forced the attackers to retreat into the surrounding bush before scanning and clearing the area for possible secondary explosive threats.
Sources familiar with the incident said the attack was brief but intense, with the attackers reportedly using explosives and heavy gunfire. Some security vehicles were said to have been damaged during the encounter, although no casualties were recorded among the members of the political entourage.
Despite the attack, the convoy was able to continue its journey after security personnel secured the route. Authorities have not reported any arrests in connection with the incident.
The attack highlights the continuing security challenges along parts of northern Borno, particularly roads that have previously been targeted by insurgents.
Security agencies are expected to maintain heightened vigilance along the route and surrounding communities as political activities increase ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
