UK Police to Investigate Alleged Reform UK Donation Rules Breach

British police have launched a criminal investigation into allegations that Reform UK breached political donation rules following an undercover investigation involving senior party officials.                        

                                                                                                            

The Metropolitan Police said on Wednesday that detectives had assessed information provided to them and identified potential offences requiring investigation. The new allegations will be examined alongside an existing inquiry into donations involving the party.

The investigation follows a Channel 4 News undercover report in which Reform UK officials were filmed discussing potential political funding from a supposed US donor. The person posing as the donor was an undercover reporter.

Two senior Reform UK figures, Dan Jukes and James Orr, stepped down from their roles last week after the allegations emerged. The claims included arrangements for approximately £32,500 in political polling to be funded by a source believed to be based overseas.

UK electoral law places restrictions on donations and other financial support from impermissible foreign sources. Authorities will now assess whether any offences were committed and whether the payments involved constituted prohibited political donations or benefits.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has denied wrongdoing and said the party did not accept illegal foreign money. The party has described the undercover operation as a form of entrapment and maintained that no laws were broken.

The Metropolitan Police said the investigation will involve its Special Enquiry Team, which is already examining other allegations concerning donations to Reform UK. Police are also working with the Electoral Commission and the Crown Prosecution Service as the inquiry develops.

The latest investigation adds to growing scrutiny of Reform UK's finances and comes at a politically sensitive time for the party. However, the police inquiry is ongoing, and the allegations have not been proven in court.

Authorities are expected to examine the available evidence before deciding whether further action, including possible charges, is warranted.
