The University of Port Harcourt branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike over what it described as incomplete salary payments and outstanding responsibility allowances.
The union announced the decision after the university management failed to resolve the issues within a deadline set by its members. The decision was reached at an emergency congress held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

According to the branch, lecturers were yet to receive their full salaries for June, July and August 2026. The union also raised concerns over incomplete payments of responsibility allowances to eligible academic staff.
ASUU further alleged that lecturers in the School of Health Sciences under CONMESS and CONHESS had not received their responsibility allowances. It also complained that ASUU members had been excluded from monthly allowance payments made to members of other unions for more than two years.
The union said it had given the university administration 48 working hours to address the issues after an emergency congress on September 11. The deadline expired at midnight on September 15 without what the union considered a satisfactory resolution.
ASUU said the university administration had met with its representatives on September 11 and promised to respond to the demands before the deadline. However, the union said the promised action did not take place within the agreed period.
As a result, the branch declared an indefinite strike and directed its members to suspend academic and official duties. The directive covers lectures, examinations, examination invigilation, official assignments and statutory meetings.
The union has also established a strike monitoring team to oversee compliance across the university's main campus and other centres.
The development is expected to affect academic activities at the University of Port Harcourt until the dispute is resolved or the union announces a change in its position. The latest action is a branch-level dispute over salaries and allowances rather than a declaration of a nationwide ASUU strike.
