Amaechi offers to back Tinubu if petrol drops to ₦600

African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has said he would withdraw as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if petrol sells for ₦600 per litre.

Amaechi made the statement on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while challenging the Tinubu administration over the cost of living and the impact of its fuel-price policies.

The former Rivers State governor said he would personally visit a filling station to verify the pump price. He also invited anyone who doubted his claim to accompany him and record the exercise.

Amaechi said that if petrol had fallen to ₦600 per litre, he would campaign for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election and withdraw from the ADC ticket alongside Atiku.

His comments came while reacting to Tinubu’s Independence Day address and the President’s assertion that Nigeria had entered an “age of prosperity.” Amaechi questioned whether Nigerians were already experiencing the economic improvements highlighted by the administration.

The ADC candidate also criticised the removal of the petrol subsidy, arguing that the policy had contributed to higher transportation and living costs. The party has previously criticised petrol prices, saying increases have affected food, transportation, electricity and other household expenses.

Amaechi’s remarks were made in the context of preparations for the 2027 presidential election. He is currently listed as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate on the ADC ticket, while Tinubu is seeking another term as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

His statement does not represent an immediate withdrawal from the ADC ticket. Rather, he presented the proposed change as conditional on petrol reaching ₦600 per litre, saying he intended to check the price himself.

The comments add another political dimension to the debate over fuel prices and the wider economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration, with opposition figures continuing to question their effect on household costs.
