The Delta State Police Command has arrested a teenager in connection with an alleged sexual assault involving an underage girl at a hotel in Ughelli, Delta State.
The arrest followed the circulation of a video online that reportedly showed the alleged assault. The footage sparked public concern and prompted calls for the police to investigate the incident.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest of the minor suspected of recording the incident, according to a report published on October 2, 2026.
The police said the case involved a group of boys who are believed to be under the age of 18. Investigators are working to establish what happened, identify the roles played by those involved and determine whether further arrests are necessary.
Authorities have not released the identity of the alleged victim, in line with the need to protect the privacy and welfare of a minor involved in a sexual-offence investigation.
The incident has also renewed concerns about the safety of minors in hotels and other private facilities, with calls for operators to strengthen measures that prevent children from gaining unsupervised access to hotel rooms.
The police said investigations are continuing and that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings. No court has determined the guilt of any suspect at this stage.
The latest case is separate from an earlier Delta State investigation involving an adult woman and an Asaba-based content creator, which resulted in the arrest of the suspect over allegations of rape and the subsequent death of the woman.
Police are expected to continue gathering evidence and interviewing those connected to the Ughelli incident as the investigation progresses.
