David Moyes: Everton manager admits surprise at club sale plans by The Friedkin Group

Everton manager David Moyes has admitted he was surprised to learn that the club’s owners, The Friedkin Group (TFG), are considering selling a controlling stake in the Premier League side less than two years after completing their takeover.

The American investment group announced on Friday, October 9, that it was exploring new investment options for Everton, including the potential sale of a controlling interest. The group said it would consider offers only from parties it believes can take the club forward.

Moyes said he had only learned about the development that morning, alongside other supporters and people connected with the club. He described the news as surprising, noting that TFG had taken full control of Everton in December 2024.

“I truly believed with new ownership we were in it completely,” Moyes told reporters, explaining that his ambition when returning to Everton was to help restore the club to a position where it could challenge for European qualification more regularly.

The manager also suggested that the summer transfer window had given him some indication that the owners’ plans might not match his initial expectations. Everton supporters had hoped for further squad investment as the team looked to build on its progress and establish itself among the stronger sides in the Premier League.

Despite his surprise, Moyes said his greatest concern was the uncertainty facing Everton supporters. The club has experienced several ownership-related setbacks in recent years, including failed takeover attempts before TFG completed its acquisition.

Moyes said he felt particularly sorry for fans who must once again wait to discover who will control the club’s future. He added that he remained committed to helping the team focus on its performances while the ownership situation develops.

TFG said its immediate priorities after taking over were to stabilise Everton’s finances, support the team and help complete the move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The group believes those foundations are now in place and that it is appropriate to consider the club’s next phase.

The owners have appointed investment bank Moelis & Company to advise on the process. They have also said they will continue supporting Everton during the review and will not comment further while it is ongoing.

Everton’s potential change of ownership comes as the club seeks greater consistency on the pitch and aims to build on its recent progress. For now, no new owner has been confirmed, and the process does not necessarily mean a sale will be completed.

Moyes and his players are expected to remain focused on their upcoming fixtures while the club considers its options. The outcome could shape Everton’s long-term investment plans, squad development and ambitions in English football.
